Biography:
DJ
Cheb i Sabbah was born in Algeria and moved
to Paris, France in the '60s. He is
one of the earliest practitioners of the art of
deejaying and began spinning in Paris in 1964
where he first saw and met The Living Theatre.
He joined The Living Theatre in 1971 and started
a theater troupe in San Francisco named Tribal
Warning Theatre. Since the late '80s, DJ Cheb
i Sabbah has been an icon of the DJ circuit in
San Francisco and has been involved in a breathtaking
variety of musical collaborations and performances
including Qawwali maestro Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan
and jazz trumpeter Don Cherry.
His masterful trilogy of recent albums on Six
Degrees Records: Shri Durga (1999), MahaMaya -
Shri Durga ReMixed (2000), and Krishna Lila (2002),
are cult classics that have established him as
a unique artist who creates bridges between cultures
with a deeply moving sound drawn from DJ wizardry
and world music aesthetics. These iconoclastic
records have made Cheb i Sabbah (or, Chebiji,
as he is referred to respectfully), a touchstone
of hip spirituality in the far reaches of Europe
and Asia and brought him cult status in the club
land underground of the U.S. His latest release,
As Far As (2002), is a whirligig of a mix album
spanning three continents, nine languages and
probably as many musical genres.
Cheb i Sabbah's trademark infusion of dance floor
musical stylings with Asian, Arabic and African
aesthetics reaches beyond the senses. On the club
scene, Cheb i Sabbah skillfully marries dance
music to sublime Indian classical music, often
accompanied by Asian and Arabic dancers, drummers
and singers. Cheb i Sabbah offers the listener
novel sounds that transcend the exotica and provides
electronic music an emotional depth often lacking
in club sounds today.
